There are so many types of lotus to choose from, each one beautiful and unique in its own way.

As an aromatherapist and cosmetic formulator, I’ve always been drawn to rare oils and absolutes. Lotus is one of those precious oils that isn’t exactly rare, but it's also not something you can find just anywhere. Let’s explore how this oil is produced—and where you can find authentic lotus oil.

Lotus Oil Production. A Rare and Precious Elixir:

The Raw Material: Lotus Flowers

There are two main types of lotus used for oil production:

  • Pink Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) – the most common in perfumery and Ayurvedic practices.

  • Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) – revered by ancient Egyptians for its euphoric, spiritual qualities.

Both flowers are incredibly fragile and need to be harvested early in the morning, when their aroma is strongest.

Extraction Method: Solvent Extraction (Not Steam Distillation)

Lotus petals are too delicate to be steam-distilled like most essential oils. Instead, they go through solvent extraction to produce a “concrete,” which is further processed into an “absolute.”

Here's the breakdown:

  • Step 1: Solvent extraction – Petals are soaked in a solvent like hexane, which pulls out aromatic compounds and waxes.

  • Step 2: Purification – The solvent is evaporated, leaving behind a waxy concrete.

  • Step 3: Absolute production – The concrete is then mixed with alcohol. When the alcohol evaporates, what remains is the pure lotus absolute—a highly concentrated aromatic essence.

IMPORTANT: There is no such thing as 100% pure “steam-distilled lotus essential oil.” If someone claims to sell one, it’s likely mislabelled or diluted.

Fascinating Facts About Lotus:

  • Lotus seeds can remain viable for over 1,000 years.

  • The flower has a unique ability to self-clean—a property called the "lotus effect."

  • It is both an edible plant (roots, seeds, and stems) and a sacred object.

  • In many Eastern cultures, lotus is a symbol of the chakras, especially the crown chakra.

Understanding Lotus Absolutes and How to Use Them in Formulations:

I received my lotus oils from Iran. I had wanted them for a long time, and finally, one of my friends—who travels to Iran frequently—brought me these magical bottles. Now, I have two precious oils in my collection:

Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) This oil has an amazing, fresh, and delicate aroma. It starts with a discreet scent, slightly woody in character. Over time, the fragrance evolves, becoming warmer with soft, fruity undertones. It’s a stable, grounded scent—not overpowering, but serene. The aroma evokes a sense of calm and inner balance.

White Lotus (Nymphaea ampla) Sweet, yet remarkably light, this aroma invites you to inhale it over and over again. It’s like being gently wrapped in a soft, fragrant cloud. As it warms on the skin, it transforms into a subtle, delicate sweetness—never cloying or overpowering, but rather refined. It feels like the scent of a familiar fruit you can’t quite name.

💡 I’d love to share two simple recipes that you can easily make at home. Since lotus oils are quite expensive, I believe it’s important to create products that truly showcase their beauty and offer lasting value. These recipes are designed to add a meaningful, energetic “charge” to your formulations—so you can enjoy every drop to the fullest.

🪷Natural Perfume:

Forget about Sephora and other so-called perfume stores selling 100 ml bottles of "perfume"—these are synthetic, lab-created aromatic chemicals that can actually be harmful to your health. True perfumery is far more beautiful and, at the same time, deeply healing. It draws on nature’s raw materials to create aromas that not only smell divine but also support the well-being of the body and mind.

Real perfume is crafted from essential oils, absolutes, CO2 extracts, natural resins, ambers, and sometimes animal-derived materials. These compositions are powerful and precious, often made in small batches—just 3 to 5 ml—yet they can last for years, as only a single drop is needed at a time.

Let’s create a simple version of a natural perfume. We’ll dilute the lotus oil in fractionated coconut oil to make it more accessible, since the lotus absolute is very expensive. This gentle blend won’t be overly concentrated, but it will give you a feel for the process and show you how to recreate this beautiful product again and again.

🪷Body Frappe:

What could be better than a homemade cream where you know every single ingredient? Lotus oil adds an extra touch of luxury to this body “frappé,” giving you something you’ll enjoy all day long. It provides deep moisture for the skin and leaves a divine, natural aroma. If you use it on your body, you won’t even need perfume. This product will be a beautiful complement to your existing skincare routine.

The lotus isn't just a flower🪷—it’s a story, a symbol, and a sacred presence in spiritual traditions worldwide. Whether you use it in your skincare rituals, meditative blends, or as a botanical muse, lotus has the power to awaken beauty and meaning in your everyday life.
